If you've ever walked out to your car on a cold morning, opened the door and found the inside of the windows covered in condensation, you'll know how annoying it can be.

You start the engine, turn on the demister and sit there waiting for the windscreen to clear. Sometimes it feels like it takes forever.

I've had plenty of those mornings myself. And while there are several things you can do to reduce condensation, one of the simplest solutions I've found is keeping a car dehumidifier bag inside the vehicle.

But how do these little bags actually work? And are they really worth having in your car?

What Is a Car Dehumidifier Bag?

A car dehumidifier bag is a small moisture-absorbing product designed to reduce excess humidity inside your vehicle.

Unlike an electric dehumidifier, it doesn't need batteries, a power socket or any complicated setup. You simply place it inside the car and let it absorb moisture from the surrounding air.

They can be particularly useful during colder and wetter months when cars tend to suffer from increased condensation.

How Does a Car Dehumidifier Bag Work?

The basic idea is surprisingly simple.

The material inside the bag contains a moisture-absorbing substance. As damp air circulates around the vehicle, the absorber attracts and holds moisture.

Over time, this can help reduce the amount of moisture floating around inside the cabin.

Less moisture in the air can mean less condensation settling on your windows, particularly overnight when temperatures drop.

It's not magic and it won't replace your car's heating and ventilation system, but it can be a useful extra line of defence against excess moisture.

Why Do Cars Get So Much Condensation?

There are several reasons why moisture builds up inside a car.

Wet clothing and shoes: Rainwater brought into the car eventually evaporates into the cabin.

Wet floor mats: Damp carpets and mats can release moisture for hours.

Breathing: Every passenger adds moisture to the air simply by breathing.

Cold weather: Cold windows are particularly prone to condensation.

Wet items: Umbrellas, coats, sports equipment and other damp items can all add moisture to the cabin.

Poor ventilation: Moist air can remain trapped inside the vehicle if it isn't properly circulated.

This is why you might clean the windscreen, leave the car for a few hours and find it fogged up again later.

Where Should You Put a Dehumidifier Bag in Your Car?

Placement matters.

I generally prefer putting a moisture absorber somewhere where it won't get in the way but still has plenty of exposure to the cabin air.

Good locations can include:

  1. A secure area on the dashboard
  2. A door pocket
  3. The centre console area
  4. Under a seat, provided it is secure and cannot interfere with anything
  5. The boot, particularly if damp items are regularly stored there

If you're using more than one bag, spreading them around the vehicle can make sense. For example, one in the cabin and another in the boot can help tackle moisture in different areas.

Always make sure the bag is positioned securely and cannot interfere with pedals, controls, visibility or other essential parts of the vehicle.

How Long Does a Car Dehumidifier Bag Last?

This depends on the type of bag you buy, how much moisture is present and the manufacturer's instructions.

Some disposable products are designed to be thrown away once they are saturated. Others are reusable and can be dried or refreshed so they can be used again.

One useful feature to look for when buying a reusable bag is a moisture indicator. Some products change colour when they need to be refreshed.

That's much easier than having to guess whether the bag has reached its limit.

Can You Reuse Car Dehumidifier Bags?

Yes, some can.

Reusable dehumidifier bags are designed to be dried or refreshed once they have absorbed a certain amount of moisture.

However, the method varies between products, so it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than assuming every bag can be treated in the same way.

Some reusable products can be refreshed using a microwave, while others may be designed to dry naturally or using another method.

If you're buying one, I'd specifically look for a product with clear instructions and an easy way to tell when it needs refreshing.

Can a Dehumidifier Bag Stop Car Windows From Fogging Up?

It can certainly help reduce the moisture that contributes to condensation, but it's important to have realistic expectations.

If your car has a serious water leak, soaked carpets or another underlying moisture problem, a dehumidifier bag isn't going to fix it.

Think of it as part of a bigger approach.

Keeping the interior dry, removing wet items, using your air conditioning and ventilation correctly, and checking for sources of unwanted water can all help.

A dehumidifier bag can then help deal with some of the remaining moisture in the cabin.

Are Car Dehumidifier Bags Worth Buying?

For me, the biggest advantage is convenience.

There's no installation, no wiring and no need to remember to switch anything on. You put one in the vehicle and leave it to do its job.

They're also small enough that they don't take up much valuable space, which is important when you already seem to have half your life stored in the car.

If you regularly deal with condensation, especially during autumn and winter, a reusable moisture absorber is a relatively simple product to try.

What Should You Look For When Buying One?

Not all car dehumidifier bags are the same, so I'd look at a few things before buying.

Moisture capacity: Check how much moisture the product is designed to absorb.

Reusable design: Reusable products can be more convenient and economical over the long term.

Moisture indicator: A colour-changing indicator can tell you when the bag needs attention.

Size: Make sure it fits comfortably inside your vehicle without becoming a nuisance.

Anti-slip features: Useful if you're keeping the product on a surface where it could move around.

Clear instructions: Particularly important for products that need to be refreshed.

Don't Ignore the Cause of Excess Moisture

One thing I've learned from dealing with condensation is that a dehumidifier should not be used to hide a bigger problem.

If your car suddenly starts getting much wetter inside than usual, it's worth investigating.

Check the carpets and floor mats for dampness. Look around the boot and spare-wheel area. Make sure doors and windows are closing properly and look for any obvious signs of water getting into the vehicle.

If there's a leak, fixing the source should always be the priority.

A dehumidifier bag is best viewed as a way of managing everyday moisture, rather than a solution to a serious water-ingress problem.

Final Thoughts

Car condensation is one of those small problems that can become a real pain when you experience it every morning.

A dehumidifier bag isn't going to solve every moisture problem, but it can be a simple and inexpensive way to help reduce excess humidity inside your vehicle.

If your car regularly suffers from misted windows, it's worth looking at the bigger picture too. Check for wet carpets, damp mats, leaks and anything else that could be introducing moisture into the cabin.

And if you've dealt with all of that, adding a reusable car dehumidifier bag is certainly something I'd consider keeping in the vehicle, particularly through the colder and wetter months.

Sometimes the simplest accessories are the ones you appreciate most when you're sitting in your car on a cold, wet morning waiting for the windscreen to clear.
